Option becomes obligation

Option becomes obligation is the pattern where a new tool or channel arrives as a choice and, once enough people adopt it, turns into the baseline everyone is judged against for refusing.

How it works

Adoption changes the default for everyone, not just the adopter. The coin slot goes away, and the app that was a convenience is now compulsory, including where it does not work. Nobody decides to remove the option; the cheaper channel simply wins on the only axis being measured. The cost of a norm is paid by everyone, including those who never wanted it, and the talks offer no mechanism for reversing one once it has set.

What it changes for a personal brand

Before you adopt the tool everyone is adopting, ask what you will owe your audience once you have it: daily posting, instant replies, being always on. The obligation arrives later than the option and does not leave, so the question is not whether you can start but whether you would survive stopping.
