Local maximum
A local maximum is a position that cannot be improved by any small change, so that getting anywhere better first means getting worse.
How it works
Optimising where you already stand has diminishing returns: each increment of polish buys less than the one before, and eventually nothing nearby is higher. The only exit is a move that looks wrong on every short-term measure, because you have to go down to find the other peak. Systems run purely on what already works get trapped here and do not notice, since every local test still says they are doing fine. In the talks this is why a colony keeps members that wander at random, and why the rare deliberately strange move is not indulgence but the only way out.
What it changes for a personal brand
Lay your last ten pieces side by side and measure how far each sits from your own default: same length, same format, same opening move. A narrow spread is a peak. Run one piece a month whose only justification is that it does not resemble the other nine, and count the dip as part of the move.
